SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee swept the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tennis Player of the Week awards for the week ending March 19. Senior David Shay (Martinez, Ga./Augusta Prep) was named the men's athlete of the week, while sophomore Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) claimed the women's honor.
Shay helped lead the 11th-ranked Generals to a 3-0 week by going 2-0 at No. 1 singles and teaming with sophomore Stuart Sanford (New Orleans, La./Jesuit) to go 2-0 at No. 1 doubles. In singles play, Shay defeated Kyle Allen of Roanoke, 6-4, 6-0 and Brian Remsch of Bridgewater, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, he and Sanford downed Allen and Sabastian Castro of Roanoke, 8-4, and Dave Behm and Jarrod Spessard of Bridgewater, 8-0. A two-time All-American, Shay has logged a 9-5 singles record and 12-4 doubles mark on the season.
Weston notched a 3-0 singles record and a 3-0 doubles record to help the second-ranked Generals to a 4-0 week (2-0 ODAC). In a 9-0 win over Guilford, Weston defeated Song an Nguyen, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and teamed up with junior Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) to defeat Nika Botkin and Lia Williams, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles. In an 8-1 win over No. 26 Swarthmore, Weston knocked off Waverly Lutz, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and partnered up with junior Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) to down Lutz and Sara Sargent, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles. In an 8-1 win over No. 25 Mary Washington, Weston defeated Rebecca Morse-Karzen, 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and teamed with Applegate to knock off Morse-Karzen and Kelsey Mansmann, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles. Weston improved to 12-2 in singles and 12-2 in doubles this season.
The W&L men are 10-5 overall and 7-0 in the ODAC, while the women are perfect at 13-0 overall and 8-0 in the ODAC.
