W&L BASEBALL SELECTED FIFTH IN ODAC PRESEASON POLL

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) released its baseball preseason coaches poll on Friday and Washington and Lee was picked fifth among the conference's 10 teams.

Bridgewater earned the top spot with 93 points and five first place votes, while Lynchburg was second with 83 points and one first place vote. Hampden-Sydney, the defending conference champion, was third with 80 points and four first place votes, followed by Virginia Wesleyan (79 points) and W&L (59 points).

W&L returns seven starters, including three All-ODAC performers, from last season's 27-13 (10-8 ODAC) squad. The trio are senior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), junior outfielder/second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) and junior catcher Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds).

McConnell batted a team-high .427 and set single-season records for hits (67), doubles (24), RBI (56) and total bases (114), while Miller notched a .391 average on 63 hits in a school-record 161 at-bats. He also had a team-high 21 walks. Wesley hit at a .347 clip with three homeruns, 10 doubles and 30 RBI.

W&L opens the 2006 season on Mon., Feb. 13 at Piedmont. The game begins at 3:00 pm.
