GLEN ALLEN, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team was one of 73 Division III institutions to receive the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Team Award for acheiving a team grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. Additionally, 11 Generals were named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad.

W&L, which posted a team GPA of 3.138 during the fall term, was one of three ODAC schools to be honored joining Bridgewater and Lynchburg. Eastern University and Rensseleaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) tied for the highest GPA at 3.46.

Individuals named to the academic squad were senior forward Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River), senior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), senior midfielder Kate Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends), junior defender Rebecca Hatchett (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads), junior forward Amy Volkmann (Norfolk, Va./Granby), sophomore forwards Kat Allen (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) and Maggie Nugent (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate), sophomore defender Laura Nugent (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), freshman forwards Louise Bance (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherines) and Melissa Dolan (Englewood, Colo./Kent Denver) and freshman defender Liz Garson (Richmond, Va./Collegiate).

W&L finished the 2005 season with a 15-6 overall record (7-1 ODAC), won its first-ever ODAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
