SALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s basketball team was picked to finish 10th out of 10 teams in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll which was released on Thursday afternoon at the conference’s media day.
Defending conference champion Virginia Wesleyan sits atop the poll after receiving six first-place votes. Randolph-Macon was picked second with three first-place votes, while Hampden-Sydney was chosen third with one first-place vote. Roanoke was fourth, followed by Eastern Mennonite, Guilford, Bridgewater, Lynchburg, Emory & Henry and W&L.
The Generals enter the 2005-06 season with three returning starters, all of whom were the team's top scorer's. Sophomore forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) leads the way after averaging 11.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per game last winter. Junior guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood) and sophomore forward Femi Kusimo (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) are also back after averaging 10.7 and 10.2 points per game, respectively.
W&L opens its season on Nov. 18-19 as it hosts the W&L Tip-off Tournament. The Generals will play Manhattanville in the first round on Nov. 18 at 8:00 pm.
