LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee and VMI will meet on the basketball hardwood on Saturday evening for an exhibition contest. The game will be played at VMI's Cameron Hall at 7:00 pm.
Admission for the contest will be $1.00 or free admission with a canned food good. Proceeds from the contest will be given back to the Lexington community and will be split evenly between the Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization (RARO) and the Rockbridge Food Pantry.
Both institutions encourage their students, faculty, staff and fans to attend the game and support the schools' efforts to give back to the Lexington community through the contest.
The game will mark the first meeting between the two teams since the 1996-97 season. The Keydets carry a 3-0 all-time mark in games against the Generals.
W&L returns three starters from last season's team which finished 2-23 overall. Sophomore forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) averaged a team-best 11.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per game last season, while junior guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood) and sophomore forward Femi Kusimo (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) averaged 10.7 and 10.2 points per game, respectively.
VMI is coming off a 9-18 season and is paced by sophomore forward Reggie Williams, who averaged a team-high 15.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per outing last winter. Junior guard Matt Coward also returns after posting 11.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
Washington and Lee will open its regular-season schedule on Nov. 18-19 as it hosts the W&L Tip-off Tournament. The Generals will begin with Manhattanville College on Nov. 18 at 8:00 pm. The consolation and championship games are slated for 6:00 and 8:00 pm on Nov. 19.
