LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team had three players earn spots on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III All-South Region team which was announced on Wednesday.
Sophomore defender Kelley Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) was selected to the first team, freshman midfielder Gina Von Sternberg (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) earned second team honors, while junior defender Meghan Hayde (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) garnered third team recognition. Zagol, Von Sternberg and Hayde were among the 11 players named to each team.
Zagol followed up her impressive rookie season of a year ago by teaming with Hayde to spearhead the Generals' defense. With Zagol and Hayde as the linchpins in the defensive backfield, the Generals' opponents scored just 15 goals (an average of 0.65 goals per game) while posting 10 shutouts. For their play this season, both Zagol and Hayde were selected as Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference performers.
Von Sternberg tied for second on the team in scoring with 26 points on 10 goals and six assists. A Second Team All-ODAC selection, she also was voted the league's Rookie of the Year by the coaches.
W&L wrapped up its season with a school-record 17 wins against two losses and three ties. The Generals rode a 20-game unbeaten streak to their first ODAC Championship and first berth in the NCAA Tournament where they advanced to the NCAA South Region semifinals.
