LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's indoor track teams were picked to finish fourth and fifth, respectively in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll which was released on Tuesday morning.
On the men's side, five-time defending ODAC champ Lynchburg is the preseason favorite, garnering four first place votes. Following Lynchburg are Bridgewater (one first place vote), Eastern Mennonite and Roanoke and Washington and Lee in a tie for fourth.
The Generals will welcome back senior co-captain Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) who finished second in both the 55 meter dash (6.64) and the long jump (6.72 meters) at last year's indoor championships. Also returning are two ODAC champs, senior Mat Rapoza (Kill Devil Hills, N.C./Manteo), who captured first place in the shot put with a toss of 13.51 meters, and sophomore Wes Bell (Dalton, Ga./McCallie), who placed first in the 1600 meters (4:27.80).
Roanoke, the 2001-2002 ODAC champ in women's indoor track, is the coaches' preseason No. 1 after having received three first place votes. Tabbed second is Lynchburg (two first place votes), followed by Eastern Mennonite, Bridgewater and W&L.
Returning to lead W&L are junior co-captain Erin Johnson (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) and sophomore co-captain Meredith Walker (Travelers Rest, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal). Junior Angel Daniels (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and sophomore Liz Crawford (West Orange, N.J./Mount St. Dominic Academy) return after tying for fifth in the high jump (1.37 meters) at last year's ODAC Championships.
The Generals season will get underway on Fri. and Sat., Jan. 24-25 when both the men's and the women's teams compete at Christopher Newport.
