LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior offensive lineman Mat Rapoza (Kill Devil Hills, N.C./Manteo) and senior tailback Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) were both named to the D3Football.com preseason All-America team released on Tuesday morning. Rapoza was a first team selection, while Watson garnered second team honors.
Rapoza will be playing his first game for the Generals this season after transferring from Swarthmore following the College's decision to drop football. Last season, Rapoza earned First Team All-Centennial Conference and Second Team All-America honors after blocking for the Garnet Tide's first-ever 1,000-yard back.
Watson, a fifth-year senior, enters the 2001 season just 590 yards from breaking the W&L career rushing record. His current total stands at 2,482 after playing in just 22 games over four years due to injuries.
Last season, Watson earned ODAC Player of the Year honors in addition to being named First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-State and Second Team All-South Region. He rushed for a school-record 1,325 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also set a W&L record with 1,997 all-purpose yards, a total which placed him fourth in Division III last season.
Rapoza and Watson join Emory & Henry defensive end Jelani Patterson and Guilford punter John Alt as the only ODAC players named to the team.
Washington and Lee will begin its 2001 season on Sept. 8 as it travels to Johns Hopkins for a 12:00 pm meeting with the Blue Jays.
