LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Athletic Director Mike Walsh has announced that the annual W&L Fall Golf Classic will be formally changed to the Buck Leslie Memorial Golf Invitational.
Leslie had been involved with the W&L golf program from 1963 to 1995, serving as the head coach from 1975 until his retirement in 1995. He passed away in May of 1998.
"We're very pleased to be able to place Buck Leslie's name on our fall golf invitational," said Walsh. "Buck meant so much to Washington and Lee. It is fitting that we name the golf invitational after him so that his name will forever be linked with golf at W&L."
Over his 20 seasons as head coach, Leslie's posted a 261-44-4 overall record, claiming seven Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships and advancing to the NCAA Division III Championships five times. Leslie's golfers earned All-ODAC honors on 33 occasions and All-America honors seven times.
"I'm extremely pleased to hear that our fall invitational will be named after Buck," said current head golf coach Gavin Colliton. "He was a tremendous man who deserves to be a part of this program even today. His accomplishments as head coach are certainly impressive and I'm proud to be part of the program that he helped build into what it is today."
The 2000 Buck Leslie Memorial Golf Invitational will be held on Sept. 18-19 at the Lexington Golf & Country Club. W&L had been playing the event as the W&L Fall Golf Classic for the past 19 years.
