MEMBER OF W&L'S 1951 GATOR BOWL TEAM PASSES ON

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- Charles Roy Smith '52, a member of the 1950 Washington and Lee football team that participated in the 1951 Gator Bowl, passed away on February 9, 2001 after battling a serious illness.

Smith, 72, was a two-year letterwinner at Washington and Lee, starting on the defensive line his final two seasons. The 1950 team allowed only 140 points all season (12.7 ppg) and allowed seven points or less to an opponent in six of 11 contests.

Prior to Washington and Lee, Smith attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, W.Va., and served in the United States Army for 18 months during the occupation of Japan.

Following graduation from W&L, he enrolled at West Virginia University to study law and served as a volunteer football coach. After graduating from WVU, Smith practiced law and made a career as a prosecuting attorney.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 27, at the Bland Street Methodist Church in Bluefield, W.Va., at 11:00 am.
