SEVENTY-SIX W&L STUDENTS EARN SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARDS

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Mike Walsh has announced that 76 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

Additionally, seven of the students honored achieved grade point averages of 4.0 or higher (an A+ is worth 4.330 at W&L). Among the students achieving 4.0 or higher GPA's were junior men's swimming captain James Browne (Ontario, Canada/University of Toronto), senior men's tennis captain Scott Babka (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brother's Academy), sophomore men's tennis player Matt Howenstein (Belleville, Ill./Althoff Catholic), junior track athlete Jason Nichols (Austin, Texas/Westlake), freshman wrestling manager Tracy Stitt, sophomore women's tennis player Jennifer Strawbridge (Houston, Texas/Westfield), and sophomore men's track athlete Patrick Wright (Arlington, Texas/Trinity Valley).

Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included senior All-ODAC and All-State men's soccer player Sam Chase (Marietta, Ga./Walton), who is the leading scorer in school history, junior All-ODAC women's tennis player Erin Eggers (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate), sophomore All-ODAC preseason All-America men's lacrosse player Pete Iwancio (Baltimore, Md./Loyola), junior women's track captain Jill Kosch (Columbus, Neb./Scotus Central Catholic), senior All-ODAC men's tennis player David Lehman (Belle Meade, N.J./Montgomery), senior women's lacrosse captain Kimmy Lubin (Wilmington, Del./Lawrenceville), senior baseball and men's soccer captain E.J. Murphy (Glenside, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy), junior All-ODAC volleyball player Nancy Reinhart (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart), and senior volleyball captain Megan Snodgrass (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield).

Twelve of W&L's 21 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the women's swimming team with a 3.306. The highest men's team GPA was men's swimming with a 3.274 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.813.

The women's teams combined for a 3.069 GPA, while the men's teams combined to post a 2.919 GPA.
