Numerous W&L Students Earn Winter Scholar-Athlete Awards

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 216 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term.  The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

The total bettered the previous record for the winter term set last year when 210 students earned the award.  The record for any term was 224 students set during the fall term this year.  Additionally, a record 34 of the students honored achieved a 4.0 grade-point average, besting the previous best mark in any term which was 28 set in the winter of 2013.  

Among those registering a perfect GPA were junior men's basketball player John Martin (Huntsville, Ala. / Randolph), junior cross country and track athlete Rachel Solomon (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep), senior field hockey player Lindsey Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine / Yarmouth), sophomore field hockey player Rebecca Mann (Hamilton, Va. / Foxcroft School), first-year field hockey player Maggie Lana (Mar del Plata, Argentina / Holy Trinity), senior football player Jack Powers (Pelham, N.Y. / Pelham Memorial), first-year football players Max Garett (Fairfield, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) and R.J. Perciavalle (Lutz, Fla. / Bishop McLaughlin), junior men's golfer Teddy Corcoran (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton), sophomore men's golfer Conley Hurst (Little Rock, Ark. / Episcopal), first-year women's golfer Dana Droz (Lancaster, Pa. / Veritas Academy), senior riders Rachel Christensen (East Brunswick, N.J. / East Brunswick) and Naphtali Rivkin (Teaneck, N.J./ Frisch School), junior rider Emily Gjertsen (Newnan, Ga. / Starr's Mill) and sophomore rider Ashley Ooms (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional), sophomore men's track & field athlete Harrison DeKnight (Midland Park, N.J. / Midland Park), sophomore women's track & field athlete Lizzy Stanton (Papillion, Neb. / Papillion-LaVista South), junior men's soccer player Cary Carabasi (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Harriton), sophomore men's soccer players Matthew Carl (Edmond, Okla. / Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics), Jake Roberts (Kansas City, Mo. / Barstow School) and Dylan Stroud (Chester, N.J. / Delbarton School), junior women's soccer players Becca Dunn (Houston, Texas / Memorial) and Addie Healy (Waterford, Va. / Woodgrove), sophomore women's soccer player Katie Clemmons (Phoenix, Ariz. / Chaparral), first-year men's swimmer Thomas Caldwell (Greenville, S.C. / Wade Hampton), senior women's swimmer Kate Feeser (Ridgefield, Conn. / Ridgefield), junior women's swimmer Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach), senior men's tennis player Christopher Hu (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood), junior All-America men's tennis player Michael Holt (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin), senior women's tennis player Allison Hupalo (Weston, Mass. / Weston), sophomore women's tennis player Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta), first-year women's tennis player Claudia Kesala (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista), senior volleyball player Katie Toomb (Lebanon, Ore. / Lebanon) and first-year volleyball player Vicky Kazmierczak (Huntley, Ill. / Huntley).

The football team claimed the highest number of scholar-athlete honorees for the winter term, with 34 players being honored.  The soccer team claimed the highest number of female athletes on the list with 19 of the 27 members achieving a GPA of 3.5 or better.

All 24 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the men's golf team with a 3.621.  The highest women's team GPA was the women's soccer team with a 3.603 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 3.178.
