LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan
Hathorn has announced that 190 students earned Scholar-Athlete
awards during the recently completed fall term. The students
are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a
grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.50.
Additionally, 25 of the students honored achieved grade-point averages of 4.0. Among the students achieving a 4.0 GPA were junior baseball player Nick Biumi (Cummings, Ga. / Lambert), first-year men's basketball player Austin Piatt (Vandalia, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne), first-year women's basketball player Sydney Lundquist (Chattanooga, Tenn. / Notre Dame), sophomore men's cross country and track runner Jacob Strauss (Great Falls, Mont. / Great Falls), senior women's cross country and track runners Katie Driest (Davidson, N.C. / North Mecklenburg) and Annelise Madison (Roca, Neb. / Norris), junior field hockey players Mary Virginia Long (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) and Lindsey Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine / Yarmouth), senior men's golfers Mark Sowinski (Greensboro, N.C. / Bishop McGuinness) and Jake Struebing (Amherst, N.Y. / Amherst Central), sophomore men's soccer player Liam Gaziano (Dedham, Mass. / Roxbury Latin) and first-year men's soccer player Jake Roberts (Kansas City, Mo. / Barstow School), senior women's soccer player Kingsley Schroeder (Dayton, Ohio / Westminster School/Miami Valley), sophomore women's soccer player Becca Dunn (Houston, Texas / Memorial) and first-year women's soccer player Kate Sarfert (Winston Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds), senior men's swimmer Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C. / Asheville Christian Academy), senior women's swimmers Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md. / Saint Paul's) and Rebecca Lawrence (Wayne, Pa. / Conestoga), junior women's swimmer Mary Gabe (Mequon, Wis. / Homestead), junior men's tennis player Christopher Hu (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood), sophomore men's tennis players Sam Borowsky (Bala Cynwyd, Pa. / Harriton) and Michael Holt (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin), first-year track & field athlete Lizzy Stanton (Papillion, Neb. / Papillion-LaVista South) and sophomore volleyball players Christina Kamis (Leesburg, Va. / Heritage) and Maddie Kosar (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Gilmour Academy).
Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included senior All-America football player Connor Hollenbeck (Alpharetta, Ga. / Alparetta), senior All-America women's lacrosse player Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn. / Darien), senior NCAA men's swimming National Qualifier David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio / Oakwood), junior All-America tennis players Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C. / Ashley Hall), senior All-America tennis player Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis), junior NCAA women's track & field National Qualifier Janey Fugate (Atlanta, Ga. / Whitefield Academy) and senior All-America volleyball player M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas / St. John's).
All 24 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the men's soccer team with a 3.500. The highest women's team GPA was the tennis team with a 3.493 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 3.116. Together, the fall sports teams combined to post a 65-33-6 (.654) overall record while the volleyball team claimed an ODAC title.
