FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its weekly honors and Washington and Lee had two athletes recognized for the week ending March 2.
Junior Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas / ATA College Prep) garnered the Player of the Week award for men’s tennis, while first-year Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta) received the honor for women’s tennis.
Shamshiri notched a 2-1 record in both singles and doubles during a 2-1 week for the Generals. In a 9-0 win over Randolph on Tuesday, he recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win over J.T. von Seggern at No. 2 singles and then teamed with sophomore Michael Holt (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin) to post an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
In a 9-0 win over Randolph-Macon on Saturday, he logged a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ryan Byrd at No. 1 singles and then registered an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles while playing with Holt. His week ended with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 loss to Michael Buxbaum at No. 1 singles and a 9-8 (5) setback against Emerson Walsh and Buxbaum at No. 1 doubles in a 9-0 loss to No. 10 Johns Hopkins on Sunday. Team team of Walsh and Buxbaum are currently ranked fifth nationally.
For the season, Shamshiri has notched a 4-5 singles record and a 9-2 doubles mark for the Generals (5-1).
Donnelly posted a 1-0 record in singles and a 2-0 record in doubles during a 3-0 week for the women’s tennis squad (5-1). In a 5-0 win over Lynchburg on Tuesday, she logged a 6-0, 6-0 win over Carter Vaughn at No. 3 singles and then teamed with senior Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) to record an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.
She then teamed up with Cahill again for an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles in a 9-0 win over Sweet Briar on Wednesday.
Donnelly claims an 8-2 singles record and a 5-2 doubles mark for the year.
Both the W&L men and women are in action again on Wednesday when they host Guilford for a pair of 4:30 pm matches.
