Two W&L Female Athletes Earn ODAC Player of the Week Honors

FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference has announced that two Washington and Lee female student-athletes have been selected as the Conference’s Player of the Week for the week ending February 23.

Junior Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) earned the award for women’ tennis, while senior Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks) garnered the honor for women’s lacrosse.

Meighan helped lead the Blue and White to a 1-1 record last week. The Generals took down ODAC opponent Bridgewater, 9-0, but fell to JMU, 8-1. Against Bridgewater, she won at No.1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, over Katie Gordon and at No. 1 doubles partner junior Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall), 8-0, against Gordon and Maria Hawkins.

In the loss to JMU, Meighan and Kirkland claimed W&L’s only point of the match at No. 1 doubles, 9-7, over Taylor Pinchoff and Alex Huie. Meighan is currently ranked second in the region in singles and first in the region with Kirkland in doubles.

Klein helped lead the Generals to a 2-0 showing last week, including a win over 18th-ranked Mary Washington on Saturday. In a 16-6 road win over St. Mary's, Klein paced the Blue and White with four goals.

She followed up that performance by scoring two goals and dishing out one assist in the 12-5 victory over the Eagles. She also tallied one draw control and one caused turnover. Klein currently leads the ODAC with 10 goals and 11 points on the season.

The tennis team returns to the court on Tuesday when it hosts Lynchburg at 4:00 pm. The women’s lacrosse team is back in action on Wednesday at Randolph at 7:00 pm.
