FOREST, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2011-12 All-Academic Team on Monday and Washington and Lee once again led the league in number of athletes honored.
W&L claimed 266 (14 more than last year and 47 more than 2009-10) of the conference-record 1,350 total All-Academic Team members named from the 17 member institutions. Next on the list was Lynchburg College with 134 members and Bridgewater College with 122 honorees.
Eligibility for the ODAC All-Academic Team is open to any student-athlete that competes in a conference-sponsored sport, regardless of academic class. He or she must achieve at least a 3.25 grade point average for the year to be considered for an ODAC All-Academic Award.
Among the Generals’ 266 honorees were 43 First Team All-ODAC selections from throughout the 2011-12 year. The list also included nine players who have earned All-America honors during their careers. They are lacrosse player Christina Benedetti '12, basketball player Becca Bolton '12, soccer players Kat Lawson '12 and Emily Leary '12, tennis players Lauren Lukas '12 and Trelsie Sadler '12, rising senior swimmer and track & field athlete Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School), rising senior football player Jake Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) and rising senior tennis player Hayden White (Baltimore, Md./Towson).
Washington and Lee won four ODAC Championships during the 2011-12 school year and posted a .594 winning percentage. The Generals also had eight athletes garner the conference scholar-athlete of the year award in their sport and three athletes received the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. W&L also claimed the ODAC’s Dan Wooldridge Overall Champions Cup for the ninth-straight year and the 16th time in the last 18 years.
