Chip Whipple is in his fifth year at Washington and Lee, currently serving as the associate sports information director. Whipple was promoted in July of 2016 after four years as assistant sports information director.
In his time at W&L, Whipple has been instrumental to the department’s efforts, serving as the primary contact for eight intercollegiate teams and assisting with the promotion of all 24 varsity sports. In particular, he has overseen work on a majority of the athletics department publications and has scheduled workers to staff nearly every athletics event on campus.
In addition to his duties associated with promoting W&L sports, Whipple serves as the department’s point person for the Generals’ Club, is the sports editor for the W&L Alumni Magazine and sits on the University Athletics Committee.
Whipple came to W&L from Dartmouth College, where he served as the athletics communications intern from 2010-12. In this role, he was responsible for working with a variety of the school’s 34 varsity athletic teams, including serving as the primary contact for 18 sports.
He also served as a graduate assistant sports information director at Ashland University from 2008-10, working with the school’s 20 varsity athletic teams and earning a master of education in sport education.
A 2004 graduate of Ashland with a bachelor of arts in sport communication and journalism, Whipple spent four years as a student assistant with the sports information department and he completed internships with the Lake County News Herald in Willoughby, Ohio and WJET-TV in Erie, Pa.
Whipple resides in Lexington with his wife Lydia, son Isaac and dog Max.
